Collage Alchemy: The process of transforming lead into gold….
If one were to ask how long it took me to get to where I am in my Healing Arts Practice, I would have to reply ‘my entire life.’ The many hours it takes to master a particular healing arts modality is more than gaining knowledge – it also involves the process of making it one’s own. I have been on the path of learning various healing art modalities for over 35 years. The study of each healing modality led to the next, and the next, and eventually they merged together in a place and in a way that is distinct and unique. I have become a mixture of all these modalities, and in many ways, my collage work is a reflection of the work that has inspired me throughout the years. I’ve come to understand the journey in healing is comparable to the Alchemical process.
Alchemy is the process of transforming a metal, such as lead, into ‘gold’. The ancient alchemists put base metals into a container, fired it up and buried it for a period of time until it was ‘cooked’ and transformed into gold. Symbolically, alchemy is the process of taking a pattern or an attitude or an emotion, and through insight, often kicking-and-screaming episodes of resistance to change, having life step in and offer the opportunity of transforming that pattern or attitude or emotion from its unconscious state, the lead, into one of consciousness, awareness and change, the gold.
In May 2014, I dealt with a heath issue leaving me with a sense of being “thrown off a cliff”. Incorporating the skills and tools I learned as part of my eclectic healing training, I leapt into that mysterious abyss, using collage as a medium of expression and exploration. My term, ‘Collage Alchemy’ describes the alchemical process I employed with collage as my medium which, enabled insight and healing.
The collages, 11 inches x 14 inches, are photographed then printed on archival watercolor paper using archival inks.
